Istanbul Yerebatan Cistern

Istanbul Yerebatan Cistern, also known as the Yerebatan Cistern, was built during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in the 6th century. This magnificent structure was constructed to collect rainwater and underground sources for the city of Istanbul. The exact capacity of the cistern is not known, but it is estimated to have a storage capacity of 80,000 cubic meters.

 

The cistern features a two-nave arrangement with 336 columns organized in 12 rows. Most of the columns are remnants from the Roman and Byzantine periods, while some are made of solid marble blocks brought from different structures.
